I must acknowledge that over my 13 years collaborating on products, I have learned from so many folx along the way. I’ve incorporated links to all their work and resources into this kit. (I appreciate you! 🤓) In the final pages of this guide, you will see additional references that influenced my thinking as well.
An Overview
Over the past 5 years of project work, redesigns, pivots, and re-imagines (lol), I led customized collaborative brainstorm that turned into a full-fledged workshop series with a name, Product Strategy Spike - a riff off of the beloved Design Sprint by Google, while pulling in an agile-twist with ‘Spike’ and 100% dedication of time. 😆
This kit will guide you through facilitating your own Product Strategy Spike (PSS) workshop with your cross-functional team.
To successfully craft a strategic direction (we will call these Solution Shapes) for a given problem space, we need to start with strong preparation and planning; After which, we’ll discuss how to ensure the workshop's overall productivity, engagement, + effectiveness with unforgettable facilitation techniques and planning.
What is a product strategy?
A Product Strategy is a long-term plan for achieving a product's purpose. It comprises many elements, such as market analysis, competitive intelligence, customer needs assessment, and technical feasibility research.
Depending on your Product Team’s structure and situation, the Designers often hold some of the unspoken responsibility of defining and prioritizing within the problem space, represented by the discover and define phases (see Figure 1.1 below.)
This kit will aid you in supporting your Product Managers in filling out some of the Product Strategy work they are responsible for;, there’s much of the Product and Business problem space that uses a problem-thinking framework.
